Constance Katsafanas, D.O. Program Director and Associate Professor of Neurology

Welcome to the Florida Atlantic University Neurology Residency Program. The program is a four-year categorical ACGME accredited adult neurology residency program. As faculty, we are committed to training outstanding neurologists in the depth and breadth of neurology.

Our home base is the Marcus Neuroscience Institute/Boca Raton Regional Hospital in beautiful Boca Raton, Florida. The Marcus Neuroscience Institute is a unique facility, in which the clinic space is on the first floor and the neurological intensive care unit and operating rooms are on the second floor. Cutting-edge stem cell translational research is housed within the same building.

During the PGY-1 year, residents spend four months with the inpatient neurology service. Inpatient neurology is the focus of PGY-2 year but residents also have dedicated outpatient rotations with Epilepsy/EEG, Neuromuscular/EMG and Movement Disorders. From 8 AM until 5 PM on weekdays, residents take call as part of our comprehensive stroke program. After 5 PM and on weekends, a tele-stroke service provides stroke coverage.

The neurology program is dynamic and continually strives to evolve based on feedback from the residents. Overnight call is currently a hybrid model consisting mostly of home-call with 2 weeks of in-house call per year per PGY2-4 resident. While on home-call, residents typically field a handful of calls, but are generally able to rest at night and arrive refreshed the next morning. Although neurology consultations make up the majority of the inpatient neurology census, there is a primary neurology service where certain patients may be admitted to and managed directly by the neurology team.

PGY-4 residents all serve as chief neurology residents. The objective is to allow PGY-4 residents to develop their clinical skills in supervising junior residents and further hone their leadership skills to prepare them for future independent practice. During the PGY-3 and PGY-4 years, residents will spend 4 months on inpatient neurology, and the remainder will consist of outpatient clinics, pediatric neurology and elective rotations.

Throughout residency, there are opportunities to participate in clinical and/or basic science research. Our residents have won research competitions, published in peer-reviewed journals, and presented at the American Academy of Neurology Annual Meeting.

We are committed to preparing our residents, not only for clinical practice, but for success on the board examination.

Overall, we are a small but growing department with a very busy clinical practice. We are dedicated to training residents in an environment in which they will thrive.

Good luck with your interviews.
